Registration forms of The International Camellia Society

Should I register my camellia?
Only if it is to be propagated and plants distributed.

Cultivar name
Must not have been used previously.  The entire ICS Register is now on-line, so checking will be easy.
Use of Latin is barred.  This is reserved for Species.
Use of the common names of other plants is barred, except where it is the name of a person or even possibly a place. For example, 'Rambling Rose' would be invalid, but 'Rose Smith' would be valid if it is the name of a person.
Names should be no more than 10 syllables and 30 letters total.
Use of words such as cross, strain, hybrid, sport, improved, and selection are barred.
Should be sufficiently different from existing names, so as not to cause confusion. For example, 'Snowcloud' was rejected as being too close to 'Snow Cloud'.
Honorifics such as Professor, Senator, and so on are required to be written in full. However, an exception is allowable in the case of Doctor. This may be spelled as Dr or Doctor in the first publication, but whichever form is used must always be retained thereafter.
The word "variegated" should be spelled in full to avoid confusion with variety.
Names may be invented words or acronyms, such as 'Lasca Beauty' (Lasca = Los Angeles State & County Arboretum).
No names with offensive connotations may be used.

Note:  This information is extracted from the guidelines codified over the years by the International Society for Horticultural Science.

In 1962, the International Camellia Society was appointed the International Registration Authority for the genus Camellia by the Council of the International Society for Horticultural Science.  Since then, the ICS has tackled the knotty problem of nomenclature, trying to remove confusion in nomenclature of cultivars around the world.  This work led to the publication of "The International Camellia Register" in 1993, which contains the names and descriptions of all the known varieties over the centuries -- more than 32,000 cultivars.  The Register, and the supplement published in 1997, remain the authority on camellia registrations around the world, consolidating registrations from around the world, both with the ICS and with national and regional registration sub-authorities.

In April 2008, the ICS nominated Neville Haydon as International Camellia Registrar, and advised this appointment to the Council of the International Society for Horticultural Science.  His contact details are:  4/6 Ingram Street, Papakura, New Zealand; e-mail: nevhaydon "at" xtra.co.nz.  Contact him if you have any questions about registrations.

Registrars ensure that accepted registrations receive publication in the appropriate journal, which validates the name, and ensures that it becomes part of the "International Camellia Register". A Second Supplement to the Register will be printed in 2010. The entire Register also is now available for viewing and use, free of charge, on the ICS Website.

The ICS registration form is intended for use by applicants from Europe and from all other countries except Australia, China, Japan, New Zealand and USA. Applicants from these five countries should contact the following:

For registrants in Europe (except for Italy -- see above), the form is available in English, French and German to download, fill in and send in by post, or to complete on computer and email to Mr. Andrew Simons, the ICS Registrar for Europe.  His contact details:  Wingfield House, 11 Brinsmade Road, Ampthill, Beds.  MK45 2PP, U.K.; email:  a.simons "at" ntlworld.com

Registration by the ICS is free of charge. Some national camellia societies charge a modest fee to cover their costs of registration and publication.
